ALEXIS SERIO “STILLNESS”
Philadelphia, PA - The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Alexis Serio titled Stillness. This is Serio’s fourth solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery, and is comprised of small watercolors (3 ¾ x 4 ½”) and medium sized works on paper that measure 22 x 30.” Stillness will run from September 2 – September 27, 2008 with an opening reception on First Friday, September 5th from 6:00 -8:30pm.
Emotional expressiveness has always been a central component in Alexis Serio’s work. Stillness is no different, evoking an overwhelming sense of vastness, exploration and searching. While her attention to the affect of light on a landscape is still present in many of the works, Serio’s attention to emotion is more intense than before.
In her new works on paper, tree branches intertwine and reach out together on small sections of subtle color leaving the rest of the space open and vast. The watercolors, while small in size, depict breezy ranges and open valleys, conjuring up feelings of happiness, light and complexity. Stillness is Serio’s past and present materialized and transferred beautifully to paper, color and line.
Serio comments on her work in Stillness, “The watercolors are reflections of my past. They are the fragments of a life filled with happiness, joy, and love… The drawings are metaphors for my loss and hope; they are my life now. They are vulnerable, fragile, tangled, sad, and silent… When all else is gone, there is stillness. ”
Alexis Serio received her M.F.A. in painting from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2000 and her B.F.A. in painting from Syracuse University, College of Visual and Performing Arts in 1998. This is Serio’s fourth solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Serio has recently shown work in group shows at: Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia PA; S. Cobb Art Alliance, Mabelton GA; Farmington Museum, Farmington NM; Kavanagh Gallery, St. Charles IL; and Imperial Art and Science Center, Rocky Mount NC. She received a President’s Faculty/Student Summer Research Award from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2005, and in 2002 she was featured in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 7th edition. Serio is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler TX. “Stillness” will run through September 27th, 2008.
