Philadelphia, PA – September 28, 2022. Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce New Sharon Church Rd., a solo exhibition by Damian Stamer. The exhibition will be on view at Bridgette Mayer Gallery from Tuesday, November 1 to Saturday, December 31, 2022. The gallery will host extended hours from 5:00 to 7:30pm, with a special artist talk and Q&A session starting at 6:00pm, on Friday, November 4.
The fifteen paintings in New Sharon Church Rd. were inspired by a plot of land on the titular road near the artist’s studio in Durham, North Carolina. Stamer has painted the abandoned barns and fields on New Sharon Church Road for over a decade, and continues to find inspiration from the landscape. His work often goes through multiple revisions over a number of years and addresses themes of time, memory, and place. Additionally, this body of work investigates the intertwining of supposed opposites, such as realism and abstraction, vibrant and muted color, and gestural and restrained marks. In discussing this body of work, Stamer states:
I was thinking about Velázquez, parenthood, Zen brush painting, Willem de Kooning,
Cy Twombly, meditation, and impermanence. I wanted to create worlds to explore, worlds where I could get lost inside.
