Rebecca Rustein: Artist Residency at Sea

Gallery Artist Rebecca Rutstein just wrapped up a month long expedition at sea on board the R/V Atlantis. Funded by the National Science Foundation & University of Georgia, this was her 8th expedition as an Artist-in-Residence to the Guaymas Basin in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of Mexico.

Rutstein was invited by a science team led by oceanographer Mandy Joye from the University of Georgia. Rutstein and Joye have collaborated together since 2018 and it was their second research cruise together in Mexico.

The team sailed on the R/V Atlantis from San Diego to the Sea of Cortez, to explore hydrothermal vents and the chemosynthetic ecosystems and microbial networks that thrive in these extreme environments.

During this voyage, Rutstein dived to the ocean floor in the Alvin deep sea submersible and created paintings inspired by the scientific data and experiences. Stay tuned to see this new series created at sea!
