Rebecca Rutstein: Sublime Nature
March 6 – April 14, 2023
Room 2305 | Academic Building | Marple Campus
Rebecca Rutstein’s abstract paintings represent a wide variety of oceanic activity, ranging from microscopic bacteria within hydrothermal vents in the Guaymas Basin to the upswell of salty ocean waters into the freshwater systems off the coast of British Columbia. Rutstein constructs her imagery during residencies aboard oceanic expeditions with scientific collaborators around the world. Describing her work, Rutstein states, “I feel passionately about creating visual and immersive experiences that shed light on places and processes hidden from view, to foster connection with the natural world in the face of our climate crisis.” Rebecca Rutstein: Sublime Nature contributes to programming surrounding Delaware County Community College’s 2022-2023 College-wide Reading selection, Kimberly Nicholas’s ,i>Under the Sky We Make (Putnam 2021), which spurs readers to grapple with the realities of climate change and recognize their own role in combatting the crisis. Within artworks that connect scientists, the artistic community, and the public, Rutstein emerges as an ambassador whose artwork addresses the most pressing issue of our century.
