Alexis Serio “Chasing the Day”
September, 2006
Philadelphia, PA - The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Alexis Serio. The show will run from August 29 – September 30, 2006 with an opening reception on First Friday, September 1st, 6:00-8:30pm.
Serio is a landscape painter who paints more than just the hills and trees of the American countryside. She paints the mood of light and the emotions revealed by the colors of nature. Her colorful canvases hover between abstraction and more traditional forms of landscape painting. She explores the variety of moods produced by natural light as it illuminates her physical surroundings. Crisp sunlight brightens the copper leaves of turning trees on an autumn day, while the soft glow of a fading summer sky creates blue shadows on a grassy meadow.
The spaces Serio creates are emotionally expressive as much as they are investigations of color and light. Her intention is not only to give a sense of physical space, but also to inspire an emotional reaction within the viewer. Her work possesses the specific ability to call to mind distant memories and feelings; the sort of half forgotten experiences one is reminded of when viewing a vaguely familiar landscape. This sense of hazy déjà vu permeates her rich canvases which give colorful form to the longings of the artist and the viewer alike. Serio’s paintings are a joyful exploration of a sensual reality in landscape and connect with the vivid memories we all have of moving through this world.
Alexis Serio received her M.F.A. in painting from the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Fine Arts in 2000 and her B.F.A. in painting from Syracuse University, College of Visual and Performing Arts in 1998. This is Serio’s second solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Serio has recently shown work in group shows at: Bridgette Mayer Gallery, Philadelphia PA; S. Cobb Art Alliance, Mabelton GA; Farmington Museum, Farmington NM; Kavanagh Gallery, St. Charles IL; and Imperial Art and Science Center, Rocky Mount NC. She received a President’s Faculty/Student Summer Research Award from the University of Texas at Tyler in 2005, and in 2002 she was featured in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, 7th edition. Serio is currently an Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler TX. “Chasing the Day” will run through September 30th, 2006. The artist will be present at the opening reception, First Friday, September 1st from 6:00-8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
