DANA HARGROVE "Divide and Consider"
Philadelphia, PA - The Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of new works by Scottish artist Dana Hargrove titled "Divide and Consider." The show will run from November 4- November 29, 2008 with an opening reception on First Friday, November 7th, 6:00-8:30pm.
Last summer Dana Hargrove travelled to South Africa and Tanzania to complete a residency at Greatmore Studios. Her new body of work explores her ongoing interest in globalization and militaristic issues, while discussing the colonization of South Africa.
Anna Brzyski, professor from the University of Kentucky writes, "Dana Hargrove’s works fit comfortably within this broadly international tendency, though her intelligent use of richly decorative forms does not stem from an impulse to follow the prevalent fashion. She does not use ornament for ornament’s sake. The evocative sensuality of color, details, and patterns that appear in the pieces such as “The Empire’s New Clothes,” “Broekie,” or “Spikes” is deceptive. The visual playfulness of these works has a definite edge. It evokes the specter of the colonial and apartheid past that haunts South Africa’s present."
Dana Hargrove received her M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 2001 and her B.F.A. in painting and drawing from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, Scotland in 1998. This is Hargrove’s second solo show at the Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Most recently, Hargrove was chosen as a finalist for the Miami University Young Painters competition, and was the recipient of an artist grant from Rollins College. In 2007 she completes a residency at Greatmore Studios in South Africa. Hargrove has also produced site specific installations for downtown Kansas City, MO and a shop front in Glasgow, Scotland. She has exhibited in solo shows at the Glove Factory Gallery and Vergette Gallery, both in Carbondale IL. Hargrove also received a Full Fellowship Grant for International Artists from the Vermont Studio Center in 2003, and in 2002 was a visiting artist at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee Scotland. “Divide and Consider” will run through November 29th, 2008. The artist will be present at the opening reception, First Friday, November 7th from 6:00-8:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 - 6:00 p.m., other days by appointment. For additional information please contact Bridgette Mayer, 215.413.8893 Fax 215.413.2283
