Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce that its eighth exhibition of 2013 will be with Scottish artist, Dana Hargrove. Aspect Forming will be on view from November 20 – January 11, 2014, with an opening reception Friday, November 22, from 6:00-8:00 pm. The exhibition will feature multiple sculptural installations along with a host of paintings from her newest body of work.
Dana Hargrove has been with Bridgette Mayer Gallery for nearly a decade, and this will be her fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. She has shown extensively across the United States as well as abroad. Her newest body of work references her times spent in the hills of her homeland, Scotland. Hargrove found inspiration for this exhibition in a Scottish cairn – a tower of stones built up over centuries by passersby and hikers. It is a sign of unity, as if to say “I too, along with you,” have walked this path. Hargrove uses this denotation of community to inspire the “built up” theme throughout the series, viewing the works as family units. Per her usual, viewers can delight in unique explorations of color and form; both come together and evoke a sense of jubilancy. The same notion of gathering together is evident in her series of paintings, Production of Belonging, also included in the exhibition. Here, the artist investigate the idea of community further, by compiling images of abandoned industrial buildings from both her hometown of Dundee, Scotland and Dallas, TX during her recent artist residency. Jonathan Frederick Walz, Ph.D. describes the exhibition as “a sustained meditation on three themes: location, accumulation, and collectivity.”
Dana Hargrove received her B.F.A. from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee, Scotland and her M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Hargrove has been consistently showing her work nationally and internationally since 1998, including 10 solo exhibitions within the last decade. She has completed residencies at The University of Texas at Dallas Artists Residency- CentralTrak in 2012 the Vermont Studio Center, with a Full VSC Fellowship supported by the Joan Mitchell Foundation, in 2009 and at Greatmore Studios in Cape Town, South Africa in 2007. Hargrove was awarded the 2009 William and Dorothy Yeck First-Place Purchase Award at the National Young Painters Competition at Hiestand Galleries.
