Bridgette Mayer Gallery announces its first exhibition of 2014:
A solo show by artist Germán Gómez
Germán Gómez: Deconstructing Cities and Duos will be on view,
January 22 – February 22, 2014
PHILADELPHIA ( December 17, 2013) – Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of Spanish artist and winner of the Photo España Best New Photographer award, Germán Gómez. “Deconstructing Cities & Duos” will be on view from
January 22nd – February 22nd, 2014. The exhibition will consist of his
two latest bodies of work “Deconstructing Cities” and “Duos”.
Gómez’s, Duos, a series of portraits, remains consistent with the autobiographic theme of his work. By incorporating collage and drawing into his pieces, Gómez attempts to grasp his own image by amalgamating images of close friends, family, and acquaintances into portraits. As people come in and out his life, they become part of the diary that is his work. As he examines his own identity through the faces of others, the work serves as a record of the artist’s emotions and state of mind. Deconstructing Cities is the artist’s first venture into architectural photography. Gómez continues to push the boundaries of not only traditional photography, but also his own unique practice. The series dissects the urban landscapes of Chicago, Philadelphia, and Dallas. As he examines these spaces Gomez also expresses and explores his own disposition. Gómez states that his work “attempts to discuss his current situation. In most of these works you see a dark space, backlit, either outside a building or inside a space. In this large dark mass, you always see ‘hope’ for a light at the end; whether it is a window or the sky behind buildings.”
German Gómez received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. at Complutense University in Madrid. He has shown his works at a number of spaces around the world including Gallery Fernando Pradilla (Madrid, Spain), El Museo Gallery (Bogota, Colombia), Gallery Bertin-Toublanc (Miami, FL), Pinta London (London, UK), Scope Basel (Switzerland), Kulturhuset in Stockholm, National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen, Institutes Cervantes in New York and Moscow and Contemporary Art Museum in Sao Paulo among many others. His pieces have also been shown in prominent collections, such as 21C Museum (Kentucky, USA), Museo Nacional Reina Sofía (Madrid), and Fundación ONCE (Madrid), in addition to being featured in a number of publications, including “Gómez, G., Yo, tú, él, ella, nosotros, nosotras, vosotros, vosotras, ellos y ellas”, “Nuevas Historia: A New View of Spanish Photography and Video Art” and “100 Fotógrafos Españoles”.
