PHILADELPHIA (Feb. 15, 2012) – Bridgette Mayer Gallery is pleased to present its first solo exhibition of Philadelphia-based artist and winner of the University of the Arts Henkels Award, Nathan Pankratz. “Over the Urubamba”, will be on view from February 28 – March 31, 2012. The exhibition will feature his recent abstract paintings and works on paper.
Incorporating the concept and technique of collage into his works, Pankratz arranges planes of painted color as though they were pieces of cut paper, capable of being cropped, spliced, and overlaid. His meticulous studio process of deliberate layering and editing of painted surfaces allows Pankratz to reframe existing sources of color, shape and texture into new contexts. On the outcome of this practice, the artist states: “I think of every mark laid down as a disruption to the preceding one—and with each subsequent layer a new problem invokes the need for a resolution. The finished paintings function as records of deliberate shift.”
Nathan Pankratz received his B.F.A. at Pennsylvania State University in 2004 and went on to receive his M.F.A. at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia in 2008. He was a founder and member of Philadelphia based collective Tiger Strikes Asteroid from 2009-20011, and has shown at a number of spaces including Patterson Gallery (University Park, PA), the Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery (Philadelphia), the Institute of the Contemporary Art (Philadelphia), Musée Lausanne (Switzerland), Temple-Rome Gallery (Italy), and the Gallery @ 543 (Philadelphia), among others. The artist currently lives and works in Philadelphia.
Gallery hours are Tuesday - Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. & by appointment.
